Pop duo Jedward have become an unexpected voice of reason on social media in recent weeks as they have used their public platform to tackle misinformation around the Covid-19 pandemic.
John and Edward Grimes have been vocal in their criticism of anti-mask demonstrations, encouraging people to follow public health advice.
Speaking on The Late Late Show last night, Jedward reiterated this message.
John said: “I just feel like there was so much misleading information online. You had figures that people looked up to over the years, who had followed and they’re coming on to Twitter and their social platforms and saying these statements, and I feel it was throwing the people and we just felt like we had to come on and voice our opinion.”
Edward said: “I think a lot of people didn’t have the balls to tweet about it. I was like, I’m saying what I feel.
“Wear your mask. People are dying, people have died people have not been able to go to funerals, they don’t have their family members is Christmas. Wear your mask, change your ways, educate yourself.”
“It’s not a protest if you are spreading a virus,” he added.
Jedward have also called out other celebrities who have sent anti-mask messages including musicians Noel Gallagher and Jim Corr.
They also urged people to seek help if they are feeling isolated as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I’ve never felt so low in my life, what keeps you going is just focusing on what you should be doing like making music, doing your job.”
“This time has made you really appreciate being in the one place at the one time, and what really matters in your life.”
Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also appeared on Friday’s Late Late Show.
Despite some high profile clashes with US President Donald Trump, America’s leading public health expert in the fight against Covid-19 said the pair have a good relationship.
“As a health person, my relationship with the president I believe is a good relationship,” he said.
It’s insulting the whole country when these people are flying the flag 🇮🇪 and damaging our culture and lives! We don’t stand with you!

“There has been some tension there because I have been having to say things from a public health and scientific standpoint that were at odds with what the president was saying.”
Dr Fauci said he believes we will know if an effective Covid-19 vaccine is close by the end of the year.
“We should know by the end of this calendar year let’s say November, December whether we have a safe and effective vaccine that can then be started to be deployed,” he said.
“Once we get vaccines distributed in the population we won’t be completely avoiding and not adhering to public health measures but clearly they will be much less restrictive.
“Vaccines are going to make things much more amenable to approaching some sort of normality in society.”
