Newcastle United hero Alan Shearer has named Magpies star Allan Saint-Maximin in his Premier League Team of the Week for his performance against Burnley.
The 23-year-old scored and set up another as Steve Bruce’s team secured a 3-1 win over struggling Burnley.
Shearer is Newcastle’s all-time leading goalscorer with 206 goals for the club during a 10-year period.
Saint-Maximin has some way to go in order to catch the great man up but Shearer was impressed with him this weekend.
His goal and assist clearly caught the eye but the ex-Newcastle favourite was impressed in general with the £36,000-a-week dazzler.
He told the Premier League website: “Unplayable. A great goal and a great assist.”
Saint-Maximin signed for Newcastle from Nice in the summer of 2019 for £16.5 million (BBC).
He has given Newcastle an injection of pace and he is clearly integral to Bruce’s team.
He has spent some time out injured and it’s vital the club looks after him to get him available more often than not.
In 34 games for the Magpies he has scored five goals and registered eight assists but there is plenty of time for him to develop.
At 23 he has his best years ahead of him and there’s enough in his performances so far to suggest he will improve.
As Shearer says, he was unplayable on Saturday and the challenge for Saint-Maximin now is to start producing goals and assists on a more frequent basis.
If he can do that Newcastle could be in for a fine campaign.
