The VAR was key at the Mestalla. Valencia took the lead thanks to a VAR intervention to give a goal after a miscued clearance by Varane crossed the line. However, Asensio seemed to be fouled in the build up.
Valencia were putting pressure, but few thought Valencia would fight back. On a counterattack, Javi Gracia’s men went 2-1 up against Real Madrid thanks to a VAR intervention.
However, before the controversial incident, Cheryshev clearly fouled Asensio, but the referee did not give it. he had his arms around Asensio’s neck, but the VAR did not detect a foul.

On the counterattack, Gomez put in a cross from the right hand side, Varane sliced his clearance the ball ended up in the back of Courtois’ net despite the keeper’s best efforts.
The goal was not given initially, but the VAR (there is no goal line technology in Spain) spotted it. That part of the decision was correct, but there looked to be a clear foul on Asensio in the build up.
